Breathing Exercise

Breathing Exercises for Asthma Management

Breathing retraining for asthma reduces over-breathing patterns and respiratory muscle tension, improving quality of life and reducing symptom burden between attacks.

How to Practice

  1. Sit upright with your feet flat on the floor. Practice this exercise when you are calm, not during an acute asthma attack.
  2. Breathe in gently through your nose for 4 counts — avoid deep forceful breaths, which can trigger bronchospasm.
  3. Exhale slowly and passively through your nose for 8 counts. Do not force the air out.
  4. At the end of each exhale, pause naturally for 1–2 counts before beginning the next inhale.
  5. Practice for 10 minutes twice daily. Always keep your rescue inhaler nearby.

Frequently Asked Questions

Should I stop using my inhaler if I practice breathing exercises?

Never stop prescribed asthma medication without consulting your doctor. Breathing exercises are complementary and work alongside, not instead of, medical treatment.

Can I practice during an asthma attack?

During an acute attack, use your rescue inhaler first. Breathing exercises are for maintenance and prevention between attacks, not emergency management.

What breathing pattern is most helpful for asthma?

Nasal breathing with a gentle, slow pace and passive extended exhale is generally recommended. The Buteyko method, which emphasises nasal breathing and reduced breathing volume, has the strongest evidence for asthma.
